Intel's Sandy Bridge E hits review benches

intel logo_new hwroundup

Largest, fastest and expensive

Intel's latest Sandy Bridge E CPU accompanied by the X79 LGA 2011 chipset has finally been released, or to be precise, the NDA has been finally lifted and the work that reviewers around the world have been doing during past week has been published. The Core i7 3960X and the Core i7 3930K hexa-core CPUs are definitely the fastest thing that you can buy, but only for heavily multi-threaded tasks

It is not fair to talk about the CPU alone as today, Intel also launched the new LGA 2011 socket as well as the new X79 chipset. As far as the CPU is concerned, Intel launched two desktop models, the Core i7 3960X and the Core i7 3930K, both six core models. The Core i7-3960X ticks at 3.3GHz, has a maximum turbo of 3.9GHz and 15MB of L3 cache, while the cheaper Core i7-3930K works at 3.2GHz, has maximum turbo of 3.8GHz and packs 12MB of L3 cache

Early next year, Intel plans to add another model, the quad-core Core i7 3820 working at 3.6GHz and packing 10MB of cache. As the name suggests this one will have a rather limited overclocking abilities due to the limited max OC multiplier

intel x79SBE_1

As far as the architecture goes, the new Sandy Bridge E is, pretty much, a Sandy Bridge EP Xeon part, but with two cores fused off. The 32nm die is the largest one so far and measures at 20.8x20.9mm (~435mm2) and packs 2.27 billion transistors. When compared to Sandy Bridge, it has a quad-channel memory controller and bunch of PCI-Exprees lanes (a total of 40) that are, by the way, compliant with PCI-Express 3.0 specifications. This means that you'll actually be able to use dual-GPU configuration with full x16 interface as opposed to 2x8 on the Sandy Bridge. Of course, the new Sandy Bridge E lacks the on-die GPU as well as Intel's Quick Sync

intel x79SBE_2

Although the CPU looks quite good, at least on paper, the new X79 chipset with LGA 2011 socket is rather underwhelming. As you already know, Intel originally planned to implement SAS support as well but due to some issues, you'll be getting the four SATA 3.0Gbps and two SATA 6.0Gbps layout, same as on the 6-series chipset. Intel also didn't include the USB 3.0 controller in the X79 so motherboard vendors will still have to stick to 3rd party solutions

Most reviews agree on the same thing, the new Sandy Bridge E is clearly the fastest thing that you can buy and fits to "ultra high-end" segment like a glove. Unfortunately, you'll need a hell of a lot of multi-threaded tasks in order to harness all of that power. The lack of USB 3.0 and rather underwhelming SATA layout makes the X79 rather plain and it is up to motherboard vendors to make something out of it since Sandy Bridge E is an enthusiast product, you got to have an enthusiast class motherboard to go with it. As far as gamers go, it still makes sense to go for the plain Sandy Bridge platform, rather than Sandy Bridge E.

The price is what you would expect from Intel and from ultra high-end segment as the fastest Core i7 3960X gas US $990 price tag while the Core i7 3930K will sell for US $555.

Bans & stat-wipes handed out to BF3 cheaters

Hundreds of offenders have been dealt with

Those using booting or other exploits, or just plain cheating for that matter, might have been banned or had their stats wiped over the weekend, as Electronic Arts and DICE deal with cheaters. It will not be the last time, either, as rumors suggest that more bans and stat-wipes are in the works for those who refuse to play by the rules

The bans and stat-wipes were confirmed via EA in a tweet. The cheating offenses included taking advantage of a glitch, whereby you could rack up tens of thousands of points per game by misusing the repair tool, for example. This is a clear exploit and is prohibited by the usage agreement of the game

Again, EA and DICE have stated their policy to be a “zero tolerance” policy with those who cheat, and say they will act again on cheaters. The company is “…determined to punish those players who play without integrity.” The company remains committed to dealing with cheaters and banning them if necessary when they are made aware of the situation. A patch to fix these known glitches is in the pipeline, but no release date was announced

MW3 sells 6.5 million first day

A new one day record again

As predicted, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has set a new one-day sales record. With only numbers for North America and the U.K. to go on, the title racked up 6.5 million copies sold in the first 24 hours of release for a new one-day sales record

With 6.5 million sold, Modern Warfare 3 tops previous record holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops, which moved 5.6 million units in day one sales. Because currently they only have day one numbers from North America and the U.K., before it is over the 6.5 million number will go even higher after the other regions report their day one sales numbers

This means that Modern Warfare 3 generated an estimated $400 million in the first 24 hours of release across the three platforms that the game was released on. Our sources tell us that the Xbox 360 version has sold the most copies, followed by the PlayStation 3 and the PC version of the game

Asus to follow with two more ROG X79 motherboards

asus

The Rampage IV Formula and micro-ATX Rampage Gene

In addition to the full X79 lineup officially launched together with Sandy Bridge E, Asus is apparently preparing two more that will be a part of Asus' Republic of Gamers series and be based on the same chipset, the Rapage IV Formula and the Rampage IV Gene

As you already know, Asus has already launched a total of six motherboards based on Intel's X79 Express chipset including the P9X79 series, Asus' TUF Sabertooth X79 and the Rampage IV Extreme motherboard. According to a post over at SweClockers, it looks like Asus will introduce two more Republic of Gamers X79 motherboards pretty soon, including the quite interesting micro-ITX Rampage IV Gene

Details regarding the Rampage IV Gene are vague and all that is known so far is that the motherboard is apparently coming as it was detailed on the slide for Asus internal partners. The Rampage IV Formula is a different story and this one is based on a standard ATX form factor and has slightly less features when compared to the Extreme, but of course it should be a bit cheaper as well

Unlike the Extreme, Formula has fewer memory slots, two on each side of the socket, has 11-phase Digi+ VRM for the CPU, packs a total of four PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots that can work in either 2x16 or 4x8 depending on the usage and two PCI-Express x1 slots. The rest of the features include a total of six USB 3.0 ports (two via header) a total of four SATA 6.0Gbps ports, four SATA 3.0Gbps and two eSATA ports, integrated Asus SupremeFX III audio with X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity, EAX HD 5.0 and THX TruStudio Pro, as well as a bunch of ROG features including ROG Connect, ROG Flashback, ROG Gamefirst, XSocket, TweakIT, Voltiminder, on board OC switches, and of course, power, CMOS and Reset buttons. The one that caught our eye is the new XSocket feature that lets you use any LGA1366 cooler on this one

EVGA rolls out new Geforce GTX 560 Ti 2Win graphics card

evga newlogo

Two GTX 560 Ti GPUs on single PCB

Since there will be no new GPUs from Nvidia until next year, EVGA decided to announce its own custom card with two GTX 560 Ti GPUs on a single PCB, the EVGA GTX 560 Ti 2Win

The card features a custom 11.5-inch PCB with a total of 768 CUDA cores, 384 per GTX 560 Ti GPU, connected together via Nvidia PCIe bridge chip. The card is set to work at 850MHz for each GPU, 1700MHz for shaders, and packs 2GB of GDDR5 memory set at 4008MHz on a dual 256-bit memory interface

The card is cooled by a custom triple fan cooler that is probably more than enough to keep the both GPUs well cooled. In order to keep both GPUs well fed with power, the card requiers two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors. The I/O part features three DVI and one mini-HDMI outputs

The new Geforce GTX 560 Ti 2Win also features a single SLI connector in case someone wants to pair two of these cards for some quad-SLI fun, but according to first reviews, it appears that the connector itself isn't functional due to the fact that Nvidia allows quad-SLI only on its high-end parts

According to EVGA, the card should end up around 20 percent faster than the GTX 580 (Unigine benchmark) but on the other hand it is also more expensive than the GTX 580. The card is currently available with a price tag set at US $519.99 while you can find EVGA's own GTX 580 for around US $499.99.

28nm Wayne Tegra 4 still slated for 2012

No delays

Nvidia shared some presentation decks with the press and we have noticed that according to slide 3, pictured below, there are no delays in the Tegra roadmap

Nvidia listed Tegra 3 (Kal-El) for 2011 and the chip was ready well before August, but the actual hardware, namely the Asus Transformer Prime, was delayed with a shipping date set for December 2011. Tegra 4, codenamed Wayne is a 28nm chip, and we suspect that this will be more than one processor

We have no evidence at this time, but we expect to see both dual- and quad-core versions. Judging by the current schedule Wayne should be ready to ship by mid-2012 and in the second part of 2012 there should be some phones and tablets based on it. Nvidia might again show Wayne chips at the Mobile Word Congress show in Barcelona, Spain in early February. We expect Qualcomm and TI will use this show to show their latest 28nm chips as well

The roadmap that was leaked back in September suggested that Kal-El will be succeeded by Kal-El+, a kicker chip in 2012 and that Wayne will only come in late 2012. That same roadmap, has the Gray with Icera integrated modem, something that Qualcomm offers with S4 8969 28nm 1.7GHz dual core chip

Tegra 3 will be an attractive for many phones and tablets in early 2012, but for the second part of the year we expect that Nvidia can launch dual- and quad-core Tegra 3 Wayne chips to make the competition run for its money

So far, Qualcomm only has quad core S4 in Q4 2012 or Q1 2013, while TI has OMAP 5 with two high-end and two slower chips approach ready for second part of 2012.

Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders at 9 million

activision

Analysts say it could be that high

While Activision is not talking numbers yet, Analysts that we spoke with tell us that retailers could have as many 9 million copies of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 pre-ordered. If that isn’t enough, several analysts suggest that the first day of sales could top 6 million worldwide, with 9 million sold by the end of the week. If this comes to pass, it will be the fastest selling game ever released

An analyst we spoke with says that by the time the dust settles he fully expects Activision to sell between 27 and 30 million copies ofthe game , which is more than the two previous releases in the franchise. Activision is said to be prepared for the sales, and retailers should have plenty of copies to fill all of their pre-orders and enough extra for those who didn’t pre-order

It isn’t clear how much impact Battlefield 3 will have on Modern Warfare 3 sales. Several retailers we spoke with expected to see a lot of copies traded in for Modern Warfare 3. “Let them trade in Battlefield for Modern Warfare 3, as we still have plenty of customers looking for used copies of Battlefield 3 despite the use of itsonline pass,” one retailer told us

PC version of Arkham is bumped again

WarnerBrosInteractive

Another delay and date change with no reason

PC players waiting for Batman: Arkham City will have to be a little more patient, as we have learned that the PC version will be delayed yet again. Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed that the release date of the PC version has now been moved to November 25th

No reason was given for the delay. With the new release date, Warner has pushed the PC version back more than a month since the console version was released. While no reason was given for the new release date change, it could simply be that the developers need more time; or it could be marketing related, but no one seems to be talking

PC fans hoping to play Arkham City should be aware that  the game carries some pretty hefty requirements if you want to play it with all of the additional bells and whistles that the PC version can offer. Nvidia claims that in order to reach the game’s highest setting users will need a 2.5GHz Dual-Core CPU with 4GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 460 are necessary to run the game at this level with PhysX support. Of course, more powerful video cards are required to achieve higher resolutions and 3D support

MSI shows its high-end X79 motherboard

Meet the MSI Big Bang XPower II X79

Just a few days ahead of Intel's LGA2011 Sandy Bridge E launch, MSI has let loose some pictures of its high-end X79 motherboard, the MSI Big Bang XPower II

Featuring an eyecatching all-black design, the new Big Bang XPower II boasts impressive specs that you would expect from such a high-end motherboard. MSI decided to go for an ammo/gatling-gunheatsink design that looks somewhat like the one seen on Gigabyte's G1 models but we were told that MSI decided to go for full metal design and has assured us that those aren't plastic details. It's hard to talk about the looks of the motherboard as you either like it or don't and it is as simple as that

As for the tech specs, the MSI Big Bang XPower II feature 24+4-phase VRM design with high-end Military Class III components like solid-chokes, driver-MOSFETs, High-C POSCAP capacitors. In addition to the regular 24-pin MB connector, the new motherboard will draw power from two 8-pin EPS ones, as well as the additional 6-pin PCI-Express one used for graphics part. The rest of the specs include a total of eight DDR3 memory slots, four on each side of the LGA2011 socket, seven PCI-Express slots, and we are still not sure about the lane configuration as MSI might decided to go for the bridge chip that gives it additional lanes

The specs and feature list continues with a total of six SATA 6.0Gbps ports and four SATA 3.0Gbps ones, eight USB 3.0 ports (four from internal headers), dual Gigabit Ethernet, bunch of USB 2.0 ports and FireWire one, X-Fi MB2 integrated audio, and bunch of overclocking friendly features like on-board OC, power, reset and clear CMOS buttons, voltage measurement points, OC Genie, and Multi-BIOS

Of course , we still need to wait for Intel to give a green light but we are quite sure that we'll hear more about this top-notch motherboard
