Intel Atom D525 and Nvidia ION on mini-ITX
In addition to the recently introduced Intel H67 based mini-ITX motherboard, Zotac has introduced three new ION based motherboard series - the ION-ITX R, ION-ITX S and the ION-ITX T series

All three motherboards are based on Intel's ATOM D525 1.8GHz dual CPU paired up with Nvidia's ION, and all are mini-ITX form factors. Of course, we are talking about next-gen Nvidia ION GPU and this one comes with 512MB of DDR3 memory in Zotac case. The rest of the features include two SATA 3.0Gbps ports, Gigabit Ethernet, integrated 802.11n WiFi, Dual-Link DVI-I and HDMI outputs, and integrated 6-channel audio

The ION-ITX R series features two DDR2-800 DIMM slots with support for up to 4GB of memory, has one PCI-Express x1 slot, eight USB 2.0 ports (6 on back panel and two via pin header) and basically we are talking about a plain mini-ITX motherboard. The ION-ITX S series is pretty much the same thing except for the fact that this one has two USB 3.0 ports and uses DDR3-800 SO-DIMM memory instead of the DDR2-800 DIMM on the R series

The ION-ITX T series is a bit different as this one features two DDR3-800 SO-DIMM slots with support for up to 4GB of memory, single PCI-Express x4 (open-ended) slot, two USB 3.0 ports and six USB 2.0 ports, on-board DC-DC power supply with bundled power brick, so basically you get a mini-ITX motherboard that comes with its own PSU

Unfortunately, the precise availability date or the price haven't been announced but we're guessing that these will show up pretty soon

Sapphire officially announces its Intel-based motherboards

sapphire-logo
Intel X58 and P67 chipsets

Although these two have been rumoured and pixellized during CES 2011, Sapphire has now officially announced its engagement in the Intel based motherboard market. The Pure Black X58 and the Pure Black P67 Hydra are the first two motherboards that Sapphire is going to launch and we must confess that they look pretty good

As the name suggests, the Pure Black X58 is based on Intel's X58 chipset and supports Intel's LGA1366 processors. It features quality build and design with solid state capacitors as well as Sapphire's patented Diamond Black chokes, which should ensure that this enthusiast grade product handles some serious overclocking

As far as specs go, the Pure Black X58 features six DDR3 memory slots, two SATA 6.0Gbps and five SATA 3.0Gbps ports, three PCI-Express x16 2.0 slots running at x16/x8/x8 mode, USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit LAN, eSATA port, Bluetooth 2.1, FireWire and integrated 7.1-channel audio. In order to keep the overclockers happy, Sapphire included a debug LED, voltage measure points and Power/Reset/Clear CMOS buttons as well

The second motherboard is based on Intel's P67 chipset and brings support for Intel's LGA1155 Sandy Bridge CPUs. The Pure Black P67 Hydra as Sapphire called it, also comes with a Lucid's Hydra chip that allows card mixing when running multi-GPU setup. Unfortunately, the P67 is less detailed so we guess that we will first see the X58 one on the market while the P67 will come a bit later

Sapphire is working hard on getting these two on the market as soon as possible but unfortunately it still didn't announce the availability date or the price. However, we are sure that we'll have that info pretty soon

Geforce GTX 595 has two GF110s

CES 2011: And two 2x4 PCIe connectors

One thing is sure, Nvidia's dual-chip Geforce GTX 595 packs two GF110 cores. This is the chip behind Geforce GTX 580 and it is not exactly the coolest chip around. We can also deny any plans for a GF104-based dual-card from Nvidia

The card has a dual-slot cooler with three fans on it, at least the one from EVGA does and we can expect that the card will end up quite fast

Judging by the two 2x4 PCIe connectors the total power available to the card is 225W and we can only hope that consumption won't be too bad. It will most certainly be hot, but end users like silent fans and they kind of make peace with the fact that they are getting one very hot but extremely fast card

AMD's dual-GPU Antilles card is scheduled to appear in late Q1 and it will also end up pretty hot and fast

Parrot demos Asteroid, a connected car media solution

parrot

CES 2011: Drives with Android

Parrot has introduced it's connected car solution at CES. The head unit replaces a single-DIN spaced radio in your car, and it is basically a standard receiver with web service apps, voice recognition and hands-free bluetooth telephone

The unit has a detachable face plate, runs on a customized version of Android, and comes preloaded with a selection of applications. Asteroid comes preloaded with a few streaming internet radio applications including Orange Live radio and Deezeer. An application called "Coyote", will warn you about traffic conditions, and speed cameras while "Maps" will give you directions to the places you would like to explore. There is a "Fuel for less" and "Parking dispo" to help find you a good price for fuel and free parking spots

parrot_asteroid

Asteroid allows users to pull music from multiple devices including iPod/iPhone, USB, SD card, Bluetooth stereo (A2DP), and as well as analog sources. You can also connect a 3G USB dongle for internet access

Asteroid will begin shipments for consumers somewhere between the first and second quarter this year. Parrot is currently not disclosing pricing on the units

Motorola Atrix 4G Tegra 2 phone hands on

CES 2011: To launch in Q1

We had a chance to play with both of the announced Nvidia Tegra 2 phones. We wrote quite a lot earlier about the LG Optimus 2X and today was the first time we had it in our hands

The phone has a slightly different interface from standard Android 2.2 (Froyo) and a big promise that it will support Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) through an over the air upgrade at some point. Plans are for it to launch in Q1 in both US and Europe

The device has 1GHz Tegra 2 processor as well as 512MB of memory as well as an 8 megapixel camera. We played some space shooter game on it and it works pretty well

At the same time we had a chance to play with Motorola Atrix 4G, another Tegra 2 phone, but this time with 1GB of RAM. It doesn’t makes any difference at first sight but it sounds cool.  The Motorola phone definitely feels lighter than you would expect, and it looks great

Both phones support 1080P HD playback and have micro USB and mini HDMI connectors. For the first time, we saw the phone playing a movie trailer and not a cartoon that we've seen so many times

Gaming looks great with both Dungeon Defenders and the space shooter looked great

Hands on with the Acer Tegra 2 Tab

acer

CES 2011: Looks decent

We had a chance today to play with Acer's tablet codenamed Picaso, and we can tell you that the device works quite well

It is a 10.1 inch tablet, with 16GB of storage, and was running Android 2.2 (Froyo). We were told it will be running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) by the time ships

Android 3.0 will rely on virtual interface buttons more than physical hardware keys, and the home button will be hidden in most of these devices

The Acer that we got our hands on was powered by a 1.0GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor in its T20 variation. Although the  device ran quite well with 512MB of RAM, we would definitely like to see 1GB

The device has mini HDMI, a USB interface for peripherals, mini usb and two cameras. The rear facing camera has 5 megapixel resolution while the front facing one has 1.3 megapixel

We were able to play Dungeon Defenders on it, and were impressed with the performance. This game will ship on PC, Playstation 3 and Tegra based devices (phones and tablets).  The graphics looks great as the title is based on the Unreal 3 gaming engine

Here are some pictures on the tablet with Android 2.2.

Razer announces its 7-inch handheld concept

razer_logo

Atom powered Switchblade

It looks like Razer, a company that has always surprised us with its peripheral products, is planning to make a move into a new market segment - handheld gaming devices.

The Switchblade, as Razer decided to brand this one, is a 7-inch Atom powered handheld that has a 7-inch multi-touch display and a small keyboard that can be customized depending on the game that you are running

Since we are talking about Intel's Atom CPU, we guess that serious gaming is off the table, but Switchblade looks decent and we certainly won't doubt the quality of Razer's products. Of course, Razer was perfectly clear that we are looking at a concept design and that Switchblade might not even come out for that matter, but one can never know

On the spec side of things, the Switchblade features a USB 3.0 port, mini HDMI output, WiFi and 3G connectivity and the mentioned Intel Atom CPU

It's a nice concept that might find a buyer or two especially considering that it runs on Windows 7 and can be used for more than just basic gaming. However, taking into account the fact that market will soon be filled with a bunch of tablets, we doubt that it will have much success

You can check out the video of Switchblade in action below

MSI's GT780 gaming notebook detailed

msi-new-logo
By gamers for gamers

We managed to score some details regarding MSI's latest top-notch gaming notebook, the GT780. As these notebooks are mostly bought by gamers and those that are looking for a powerful desktop replacement, MSI partnered up Steelseries and its Fnatic, Evil Geniuses gaming teams from Europe and the US in order to make the best gaming notebook on the market

As far as the technical specifications are concerned, we are looking at a notebook powered by Intel's latest Sandy Bridge Core i7 processor paired up with Intel's HM67 chipest and yet to be announced Geforce GTX 560M with 1.5GB of memory. The GT780 is a 17.3-incher with either a full HD 1920x1080 or HD+ 1600x900 screen, dual HDD with up to 1TB of space, has two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports, eSATA, D-Sub and HDMI 1.4 outputs, Ethernet, 802.11bgn WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 2.1-channel speakers with THX TruStudio Pro and HD type 720p capable webcam. The entire notebook will be powered by a 9-cell 7800mAh battery

Not to get to those gamer related features. The partnership with Steelseries brought a keyboard that is more gaming oriented as the most used keys in games are enlarged (like the left side Ctrl), and keys actually use a "just solid" solution that brings back the good old click. Another noticable thing is the lack of left side windows key, a yet another gamer preference. The keyboard will also feature an exclusive MSI LED manager which features a three-zone LED backlight

The notebook will have an unique "engine start" power button and a mirror reflective touch sensors above the keyboard. The new GT780 beast looks good and all we need now is to see it shops and in some reviews

Enjoy the pictures

Computers are less vulnerable to viruses

y_exclamation

Despite the hype

Despite claims by the insecurity industry that your computer will be possessed by viruses in seconds if you don't buy their software, modern computers are fairly safe without them

According to the British consumer watchdog magazine Which?, computers are less susceptible to viruses and other threats than many users might think. The study found that not one of five computers connected to the internet for four weeks became infected, despite figures suggesting an estimated 60,000 new malware threats occurred daily

Each machine was used to visit a list of 22 reputable" websites, ranging from Amazon.com to Tesco.com, for an hour a day. The consumer group said it did not overload the PCs with security software, describing one as such an easy target "it was practically saying come and get me

Of course the computers were not programmed to visit unsafe sites so the moral of the story is don't visit immoral sites. Or open email, which is another thing that the test did not do

CoolerMaster Spawn gaming mouse tested

Review: How strong is your claw grip

CM Storm line of products got another addition - the Spawn gaming mouse. After Sentinel and Inferno models aimed at higher-end segment, CoolerMaster will now offer Spawn to those that aren’t in a mood to splash out on rodents. Suggested pricing for the Spawn is €33, where VAT is not included. As you can see, Spawn ergonomics is pretty different from the aforementioned models, as it’s designed especially for claw grip gamersspawn-the-look-2

Spawn comes in a nice and sturdy box that lists main characteristics of the mouse

box1

box2

We didn’t find the Driver CD inside, but it will be included in retail packages. You can find more info online, here

The Looks

Spawn is smaller compared to Inferno. You might remember that Inferno has a laser sensor whereas Spawn comes with an optical one. You can see both on the picture below, and they both belong to CM Storm gaming peripherals line
spawn-and-inferno

Spawn is explicitly a mouse for right handed gamers. It’s designed for the claw-grip, but regardless of your preferred usage, Spawn will be a good little rodent. The mouse is small and mobile thanks to a really thought out design. The right side of the mouse has a slope which is pretty convenient, especially in claw grip mode

spawn-the-look-1

The mouse is made of ABS plastic, which looks good and is pretty comfortable. You can actually see the difference between standard and ABS plastics, as the frame around the front keys is made of standard type

spawn-the-look-2

spawn-the-look-5

Spawn comes with two thick rubber grips that have been deployed on both sides of the mouse. This affords full control to lift-off style gamers during game play

As you can see Spawn comes with seven different keys, programmable via the Spawn Tactic AP software

spawn_outlook

CoolerMaster was keen on longevity and Omron micro switch technology promises minimum 5 million clicks and years of fun with Spawn. The scroll wheel boasts Japanese ultra-step wheel encoders that provide great control and precision, although we thought that the wheel could be a bit quieter

spawn-the-look-4

Spawn has a 3500 DPI sensor, making it top of the line when it comes to optical sensor mice. It allows on-the-fly DPI changes – 800, 1800 and 3500 DPI. There are no LED indicators which display current DPI settings, but we didn’t miss them too much

Spawn boasts maximum acceleration of 20 G, maximum tracking speed of 60 inches per second, poling rate of 1000MHz and image processing of 5.8 MP/s

Spawn is the first optical sensor based mouse in the CM Storm series – the rest come with laser ones. Naturally, laser sensors are considered better since they churn out above 5000 DPI, but the “butter” comes at a price. For most gamers, especially in FPS games, 3500 DPI will be more than enough

If you’re curious as to how to tell the sensors apart, you can either consult the manual or peek into the hole. You’ll see that laser mice have a narrower hole and don’t have LED glow when connected to your computer. Laser mice use beams which are almost invisible to the human eye

spawn-the-look-3

spawn-the-look-6

Next up is the anti-drift control sensor. A quality optical engine should include an anti-drift system that would provide lossless performance during lifts and drops. In other words, it’s the distance that dictates how far the mouse goes before the sensor stops tracking movement. If the distance is high, cursors tend to move while you’re lifting the mouse. Needless to say, nobody likes that

Inferno’s laser sensor has lift-off distance of 2mm; strangely enough, Spawn does not specify that. While testing it, we noticed that it heavily depends on the surface. In our case, it went anywhere between 2 an 4mm

Spawn runs pretty good on wooden surfaces and it really liked CM HS-M Battle Pad and CS-X Battle Pad. It doesn’t really like white and greasy surfaces, where laser mice for instance wouldn’t mind running

Since Spawn is pretty short, there will be enough room to control it, especially when retracting the mouse in your palm

spawn-the-look-7

Spawn Tactic AP

Storm Tactic AP allows for programming all keys or set up speed of double clicking, wheel speed, pointer acceleration, angle snapping and polling rate. The app is pretty simple and since the Spawn comes with 32KM of onboard memory, you can save it and carry it around. Macro allows for saving a string of keyboard inputs and saving it in a mouse button of choice

ap_main_control

buttons_assignment

ap_macro

ap_custom

Conclusion

With Spawn, CoolerMaster offers gamers a quality CM Storm mouse that comes cheaper than its siblings. That’s not to say that the mouse does is any lesser endowed however - for a mouse with an optical sensor it’s top drawer. The suggested pricing for Spawn is €33.5 + VAT

Spawn is smaller than regular mice but it's comfortable for longer hours. It’s a strictly right-handed mouse designed for so called claw grips, i.e. holding the mouse by its sides rather than laying your hand on it

Cleverly implemented ergonomics allows for smooth sailing all the way and the rubber grips ensure that you don’t drop the mouse in rapid movement. The mouse is light and precise and if you’re a claw-grip gamer, we’re pretty sure you’ll like it. Truth be told, Spawn can be used in a regular manner as well, but it might be a bit too short

Spawn’s integrated 32KB of memory will save settings and macros, allowing you to carry it around with your preferred settings regardless of whether Spawn Tactic AP program is present. In conclusion - robust but sleek, precise but not overkill, quality but not overpriced; Spawn is surely the mouse to try on for size

Kinect causing RRoD in consoles

Microsoft_KinectLogo

Microsoft claims that this isn’t the case

Reports have been circulating since yesterday from a number of outlets as well as some of our very own sources that some Xbox 360 owners who have purchased Kinect are experiencing what has become known as the “Red Ring of Death” after adding the Kinect add-on to their Xbox 360 console

Microsoft has been quick to respond, saying that there is no correlation between these RRoD failures and the use of Kinect. While they do suggest that any instance of this happening is apparently coincidental, the news comes as little comfort to those who have no days left on their three-year Xbox 360 warranty from Microsoft

From what we have been able to uncover, the problems seem only be happening with some older systems; apparently it isn’t widespread and does not seem to affect the latest version of the Xbox 360 console. In the meantime, we will have to see how this plays out. However, we have to agree with Microsoft that it does seem unlikely that the Kinect add-on is at the root of these users getting the RRoD

Nvidia ushers in the age of the superphone

CES 2011:
A mobile platform with full Flash compatibility

During Nvidia's press conference at CES 2011 in Las Vegas, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang went into detail about a mobile paradigm shift that is radically changing the face of computing technology. The idea that more and more consumers are shifting from content production to content consumption was emphasized during the keynote, particularly with focus on advancements in mobile computing power to make it all possible

The big star of the show this year was Nvidia’s long delayed Tegra 2 dual-core mobile processor. Introduced last year at Nvidia’s CES 2010 keynote, the 40nm SoC platform features an ARM dual-core Cortex A9 CPU coupled with an ultra-low power GeForce GPU in a marketed TDP envelope of just 500mW

tegra_mobile_superchip

Jen-Hsun starts by asserting that the iPhone and iPad have revolutionized the way we use computers and the way we build them. We’re going to have more than one of these mobile computing devices in our lives… [and eventually] we’ll have The Internet of Things

“The companies of the past are readjusting their strategies. New positions are going to emerge. At this particular CES, you’re going to see the pieces come together. The landscape is going to change, and in quite dramatic ways. Your most personal computer changed from a PC to a mobile device. The person who makes that mobile computer – that OEM – used to be a computer company. Now, you’re buying these mobile computers from wireless carriers. The person who builds it, and the person you buy it from, are different

jen-hsun_lg_optimus_2x

In essence, Jen-Hsun explains that mobile consumers are not computing anymore in terms of productivity. Rather, they are computing to consume content. “This mobile device is going to become a computer first, and a phone second. With this paradigm shift, it needs the ability to access the web in its full glory, because fundamentally the Web is today’s computing platform

Nvidia has officially introduced the age of the superphone, and starting in 2011 we will see mobile devices capable of being “fully Adobe Flash Player compatible” with 1080p playback and external Full HD display outputs becoming standardized

nvidia_adobe_ceos

Jen-Hsun introduced LG VP on stage for the announcement of the world’s first superphone. The device is the LG Optimus 2X, a rather old bit of news that we have previously written about. In early 2010, LG Electronics had a vision of creating “beauty outside, but a monster inside” device that would serve as a multitasking-centric pocket device. The goal of the LG Optimus 2X was ultimately achieved through a partnership with Nvidia and Adobe to deliver a dual-core mobile architecture that could fluidly run Adobe Flash Player 10.1 content. All in all, the device should break ground for other mobile device manufacturers looking to bring superphones to a market of consumers who enjoy the essentials of desktop multitasking in a pocket-sized environment

CES 2011: New area in 2010s

This particular CES changed the technology landscape the way we know it. It is perfectly clear that there is a mobile computing revolution going on

It is as significant as Comdex 1995 where they recognized that Windows 95 can change the world. Jensen believes that this can happen in 2010's with mobile computing

In 2000's Internet has changed the world. Every 10 years time comes for revolution - software, displays, networks, etc., get better. Now however, it’s time for mobile devices

This is what gets jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO really excited, and no wonder since they invested billions in its Tegra strategy. Luckily for Jensen even it got delayed for a year it’s finally all falling into place

Asus shows its Eee Pad Transformer

asus
CES 2011: Tablet with a keyboard dock

During its CES 2011 press conference Asus announced some of the products in its Eee Pad series, including the Eee Pad Transformer, a 10-inch Tegra based tablet that has a keyboard dock. In addition to the Transformer, Asus also announced the Eee Pad Slider, a similar device that has a slide out keyboard

We honestly can't say that Eee Pad doesn't remind us of Lenovo's Ideapad U1 Hybrid but unlike Lenovo, Asus kept the device a bit simpler. The keyboard dock is more of a dock rather than a different system. Asus decided to keep the things simple yet practical as the keyboard dock comes with a battery. It will provide additional power (up to 16hrs) as well as extra card reader/USB ports

asus_eeepadtransformer_1
The tablet itself has a 1280x800 capacitive/IPS touchscreen and is based on Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip. It will have either 512 or 1GB of memory, up to 64GB of flash storage, two cameras (5MP on the back and 1.2MP on the front for video calls), 802.11bgn WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and mini HDMI output. The device runs on Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS

The Eee Pad Slider sports the same specifications as its "transformer" brother, except, of course, the noted slide-out keyboard

Both of these Eee Pad's look pretty good. However, we'll have to wait a bit longer for them as Asus announced that the Eee Pad Transformer is scheduled for April. It will be priced between US $399 and US $699, depending on the configuration. The Slider is scheduled for May and should sell for between US $499 and US $799.

AMD CEO talks about HD 2.0

CES 2011: Experience, talking computers

AMD's favorite word of the half decade was Fusion and some 5 years after they started talking about it, they actually have chips and they are almost in retail as we speak

Last night, AMD threw a party for press and partners and invited Joel McHale to make fun of the geeks who attended. Unfortunately, Joel somewhat embarrassed himself with his limited knowledge of technology. One of Joel's guests was AMD CEO, fearsome Dirk Meyer and he talked about why AMD is better

AMD came up with a claim that 50 percent of the internet runs AMD, which is a bit hard to believe. The most interesting part, however, was the HD 2.0 that AMD talked about

Dirk also expressed his wish to talk to his PC in the future and he hopes that PC will understand and answer him back, but again there are still a lot of things that needed to happen in order to make that possible

AMD sees HD 2.0 as HD that runs on everything; its all about experience on waching a HD on your computer. HD 2.0 is something that they come up since just about anything can play HD these days, even mobile phones

Of course, you need AMD chips to get the better experience as AMD Fusion has DirectX 11 support, and Intel doesn't, that was the key point

We have our fingers crossed for AMD's Bulldozer as its time to give Intel some decent competition

Lenovo shows its Windows 7, Android tablet

lenovo
CES 2011: Atom based

Lenovo showcased its tablet last night at the CES Unveiled press event. What you see is a working prototype of a LePad tablet, which is actually a notebook with a detachable screen

The machine runs both windows 7 and Android 2.2 and we've also seen it run Windows 7. The chap was playing with it using the Stylus but fingers will do just fine

The prices we've heard around were at about $500 for the tablet but if you buy it with the keyboard it can sky rocket to over a $1000.

The device looks decent for a 10.1 inch tablet, but of course it is nothing spectacular

This is how it looks

Chrome has ten per cent of the market

google_logo_new

All at Microsoft's expense

Google's Chrome browser has had rather a good year. According to bean counters at Net Applications the fledgling browser has 10 per cent of the market having made gains at the expense of Redmond's Internet Exploder

The figures do have some good news for Microsoft. It seems that IE9, which embodies Microsoft's dream to build a cutting-edge browser, is showing signs of real adoption with usage that grew from 0.4 percent in November to 0.5 percent in December

For months now, Chrome has been on the rise. It jumped from 9.3 percent in November statistics to 10 percent in December. Mozilla's Firefox, the second-place browser, stayed flat at about 22.8 percent, Apple's Safari rose from 5.6 percent to 5.9 percent, and Opera was flat at about 2.2 percent

Chrome and Safari grew at the expense of IE, which dropped from 58.4 percent to 57.1 percent

Ubisoft retreats on annoying DRM

ubisoft_logo

It looks like it cost it

Ubisoft have finally listened to gamers and pulled the most stupid form of DRM we have seen short of locking the game away and never allowing the player to put it into their computer

A while back Ubisoft hit on this wizard wheeze of insisting that the game phone its server every time it played. While this sounds like a good idea, the problem was that it stopped those who didn't have an internet connection playing it, even on single player games.  If Ubisoft's servers, or there internet went down, then players couldn't play, and they couldn't continue to play in the future if the DRM servers were not maintained

If you looked on Amazon, you would see reviews which would complain that Ubisoft had created a great unplayable game, with the DRM being the reason it was pants

Ubisoft Games had introduced this silly DRM system earlier last year with Settlers 7. The bad effects of these periodic online DRM checks is that the game pauses as soon as the internet connection is lost and requires an internet connection to validate the install, each time the game is launched

Legal owners of the games can download a patch to update the game to this non-DRM version. Ubisoft had earlier announced that they would not be using DRM with their new real time strategy game, RUSE

AMD's HD 6950 is unlockable

radeon_logo_new

1536 Shaders with BIOS flash

It looks like all of the AMD HD 6950 cards appear to be ready for unlocking, at least for now. According to Wizzard from Techpowerup, it is a matter of a simple BIOS flash and your HD 6950 can easily turn to an HD 6970. AMD even made the process a bit easier as AMD included the dual-BIOS feature on its HD 6900 series cards and if something goes wrong you can always go for the recovery/factory protected BIOS

It looks like AMD didn't use the fuse locking on its HD 6950 cards and it is a simple BIOS update that makes the card switch from its 1408 to 1536 shaders and even reach HD 6970 clocks. For now, the unlock is possible on all HD 6950 cards and not just a handful of review samples

Nice news for all those who snatched the HD 6950 and it looks like these will be selling quite nicely in next few days. You can find more details here

Intel plans 70 + percent of Q3 2011 to be 32nm

intel_logo_new

Great expectations

Intel is currently producing and selling some 75 percent of 45nm based products, while some 25 percent of Intel's processors are 32nm. Sandy Bridge parts again in 32nm are already in production but the sales starts in Q1 2011 and already in this quarter the market share of 45nm will shrink to 65 percent while 32nm will grew to 35 percent

In Q2 2011, according to company’s projection the market share of 32nm jumps to slightly over 50 percent and naturally this is roughly the percent of 45nm market. In Q3 2011 in some nine months from now, if not less Intel hopes that more than 70 percent of its chips will be 32nm while the rest stays at 45nm

In the meantime Intel hopes that in Q1 2011 Sandy bridge wille make up some 15 percent, in Q2 2011 Sandy Bridge should cover some 35 percent of the market while in Q3 2011 Sandy Bridge is expected to conquer some impressive 60 percent out of Intel's 32nm production

These are projections and have in mind that already in Q4 2011 Intel should start to manufacture 22nm based products. AMD will barely get to speed with 32nm at that time leaving Intel with more than a year of advantage

Writing articles on betas and updates has got to be the worst. Seriously. However, filling out the third paragraph with unrelated stuff usually does the trick

US Online Shopping up 15.4 per cent

y_analyst

No one wants to go out in the cold

US shoppers are turning to their computers rather than brave Christmas shopping, according to an online poll. Apparently online shopping rose 15.4 percent to $36.4 billion for the holiday shopping season

A MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse report showed oonline sales registered double-digit growth in six out of seven weeks since October 31.  SpendingPulse's Michael McNamara said eCommerce accounts for a much larger share of overall retail sales compared to a few years ago

Most of the shopping was for apparel, where online shopping accounted for 18.8 percent of overall sales in that category, up from 16.9 percent in 2009. Buying socks for those relatives you never think about for the rest of the year has never been easier. Electronics spending has also recorded significant gains, SpendingPulse said

One reason for the gain might be the fact that it has been freezing in most of the Northern Hemisphere. Who wants to wrestle with legions of people shopping for Christmas presents in the ice and the snow when you could be sitting at your computer with a nice mug of mulled wine
